Dissecting scopes

ALL MINOR REPAIRS ARE FREE

Service:

* We disassemble and clean each major element

* Replace lubricants

* Clean optics: oculars, objectives, exposed prism surfaces

* Inspect electrical system

* Reassemble, align optics, stage, slide tracks, calibrate micrometers

* Review service before leaving premises on request

Calibration

Calibration is used to determine the value of each micrometer segment or division at the different magnifications.

Micrometer divisions are counted, multiplied by scale and divided by corresponding slide segments * scale. Actual power is then divided into the standard (0.1mm).

Millimeters are converted to microns (u).

Standard Procedure

We align, adjust to standard in all protocol. We do not over torque and will only under torque at requested preference.

To over torque is to strip threading and add unnecessary stress to mechanics.

Therefore, we adjust slide holders, optics, objectives to standard--unless parameters are preset to preference of placement (e.g. objective order/ position).

In certain cases, we may have to align the fine adjust with the coarse (because the coarse is binding too tightly or not tracking).

This involves an adjustable knurl knob that tightens and releases the coarse adjust.

If the external lock on the stage is set, you will not be able to move the coarse adjust beyond that point.

We do not touch locks unless focus cannot be achieved at all.

We are always happy to provide a maintenance log.

Labtech Services Provides:

A loaner microscope

A maintenance log on request

A six month courtesy call or sooner if you wish

Service completed on site (usually) to reduce down time

Follow up on major repairs

Instructions for care of the microscope

* Cloth cover vs. plastic (which hardens/tears)
* No transfer of oil between 100x and high dry
* Cotton ball or swab oil soak
Immediate cleaning of stage to avoid pitting, permanent stain:

KOH
Salts
Blood
Urine
Gram stain

Tips for setting up microscope for specimen viewing

* Slide covers
* Immersion oil for refractive index
* Condenser for contrast (and energy saver)

Ordering Parts

We ask you for:

* The make/ model/ serial number of the microscope.

* The identification number on the part.

We order the part with specifics and schedule a time to install the part at your convenience.

To receive the correct part directly:

Please order through the manufacturer, National Microscope Exchange or Accu-Scope.

An identification number should be on the part. The make/ model/ serial number of the microscope will ensure that the right part is shipped to you.

We will install the part at no extra charge or at a minimal fee.

We charge a minimal fee to:

* Install rheostats, switches

* Align leaves of condenser aperture diaphragm

* Replace springs, ball bearings, tracks of slide holder

* Increase parfocal length with shims

Please note that major repairs may require a greater time frame than the 30 minutes maintenance entails.
Seals

Plan achromatic lens achieve both depth resolution and width of viewing field. A good plan achromat will be sealed.

While simple achromats resolve resolution and spectrum dispersal, the width of the curved viewing field is only a working 70% or less.

The simple achromat may not be sealed.

If the 40x (or 100x) is not sealed or poorly sealed by the manufacturer, oil may accumulate between the lens due to capillary action.

We do not charge to seal objectives.
